Fruit juice protects against Alzheimer's

A scientific study has shown that regularly drinking fruit and vegetable juice may protect against Alzheimer's disease.

Fruit juice protects against Alzheimer's

The study, which lasted approximately 10 years, followed 2,000 people and yielded compelling results. Researchers found that the risk of developing Alzheimer's was 76 percent lower in those who drank juice three times a week compared to those who drank it once a week or less.

Many studies have indicated that chemicals called polyphenols, found in a number of foods, may inhibit this process and offer some protection against Alzheimer's by neutralizing the effects of harmful compounds called free radicals. However, this new study lends greater weight to previous research findings, according to Alzheimer's experts, because it was long-term and included a relatively large group of people.

The study explained that fruits and vegetables are particularly rich in polyphenols, and that drinking juice delays and inhibits the release of these substances, which cause premature changes in brain cells, thus potentially protecting against the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease.
